Nightowls League 2008/2009
3rd June 2009

Northern Ireland’s only sanctioned league, which boasts the largest prizefund, came to an end in May with the new team of RPS Scorpions (Grant Dugan and Billy Nimick) striking it all the way to the top spot, while RPS Revolutions took second (Ryan Press, Peter Lilburn, David Frame, and David Williamson). With the top two teams dominating the top two positions, the competition amongst the other teams was a lot more closely fought. It was the men on a mission, after enjoying several weeks being unbeaten (King Pins- Cameron McKay and Sal Murray) who finished in third, one point ahead of the Sharks (Jose Santos, Ken Marshall, and David Seay) and the Silver Bullets were fifth (George McKee and Sam Hull).

Billy Nimick took top average with 207, David Frame had the high game with 279, and Grant Dugan took the high 3 game scratch series with 765. Both David and Grant had the high handicap game (310) and series (822) respectively, but due to winning the scratch section, the high handicap game was awarded to Alan Smith with a 305, and high handicap series to Gary Clarke 788. RPS Revolutions took the prize for the high team game 527 and the RPS Scorpions took the high team series with 1377. Pocket Rockets won the high handicap team series with a massive 1500.

The Knockout tournament which runs after the completion of the Nightowls witnessed seven teams battling it out to win the Knockout shield and prize fund. The Nightowls Champions, RPS Scorpions went head to head with the Silver Bullets in the grand final, with RPS Scorpions coming out on top, making it only the third time in history that a team has managed to do the league double. Finishing 3rd was the All Blacks ahead of Spare Parts (Will Grier and Sam Agnew) in 4th.

Top 5 Teams at end of league:
1st - RPS Scorpions - 169pts
2nd - RPS Revolutions - 162pts
3rd - King Pins - 148pts
4th - Spare Parts - 147pts
5th - Silver Bullets - 143pts

The full results and standings from this season's league can be viewed here

The next season of the Men’s Doubles (Nightowls) will begin in September 2009. If any new teams are interested in taking part contact Eddie Best at the Dundonald International Ice Bowl or George McKee. Bowlers are reminded that the Nightowls is a sanctioned league, therefore each bowler must be a member of the NITBF, however take a look at the prizefund on offer and I’m sure you will tempted to join Northern Ireland’s premier league!
