World Youth Championships 2006 - Report
31st August 2006

team

On Thursday 20th July 2006 a team of 4 junior Northern Ireland players arrived in Berlin. The team consisted of Grant Dugan, Peter Lilburn, David Seay and Helen Tamblyn. On arrival the team knew this was going to be a tough competition with the best players from all over the world competing in the largest ever WTBA junior event that has been held in history with a total of 268 players. Another factor that was to come into play was the extreme heat that Berlin was experiencing at that time, 30˚C at 1am in the morning, with this hitting the high 30s during the day. With no AC in either the hotel or bowling centre this was going to be some experience! Although it was the same conditions for everyone so we can’t complain.

Saturday seen the official practice sessions and the opening ceremony. During practice it was apparent that the dual lane conditions of short and long oil would play a major part in this event. The short condition proving very unforgiving and tough for all players while the long condition was somewhat easier.

On the Sunday Helen was the first of the team to officially begin the event in the Woman’s Singles played on short oil. Helen ended the 6 games with a total of 929 placing her 83rd position. With no partners for the doubles and team event Helen’s next scores would only be counting towards her all event total. Helen shot 1041 in doubles and 1006 in team, leaving her in 82nd position overall with a grand total of 2976 for 18 games.

The male events started on the Monday with Grant, Peter and David all competing in the singles. David played the first squad and ended in 71st position with a 1075 total. Grant and Peter played in the second squad and shot a total of 999 and 934 respectively leaving them in 124th and 147th positions. In the doubles event Grant and Peter were to be our team and they didn’t disappoint with some unforgettable victories over Finland and Hong Kong. They finished in 49th position with a total of 2215 (Grant 1103, Peter 1112). David played for his scores to count in the all event total and ended the doubles with a 1096 giving him an all event total of 3179 and 117th position overall. Grant finished on a 3119 total (125th position) and Peter finished on a 3001 total (147th position).

The overall winners were Mads Sandbaekken (Norway) and Sharon Koh (Malaysia).

Overall a lot can be learnt from this trip and we hope to see some improved results in Orlando, USA 2008 for the next World Youth Championships! We would like to wish Peter the best of luck in his future bowling career as this was his last junior event and we hope this invaluable international experience will bode him well in future competitions.

Below I have included the personal thoughts on the event from David Seay and Helen Tamblyn.

Thoughts from Helen Tamblyn:
Hot. Very hot. In fact, I believe my exact words once we disembarked were “stuff this; I’m going back on the plane!” Big words indeed for a girl with a fear of flying, who spent much of the flight clinging to the arm rests for dear life.

In all seriousness, a bowling centre situated inside a glass fronted building, with no air conditioning when the temperate was over 30 degrees celsius outside doesn’t really present you with the ideal bowling conditions. Add to that an extremely short “short” pattern, and you know you’re in for a rough ride.

The “official” practice session was on the Saturday, though we had all bowled the day before on the long. From the moment the first ball was off my hand, it was pretty obvious that the “short” pattern was going to be a struggle – partially down to bad ball choice, partially due to lack of practise on a short pattern, and partially down to my complete inability to hit the same mark twice. Cue much moaning and panicking, and immediate loss of confidence. The long pattern was easy enough, nice simple shot down second arrow and it was there. Despite my loss of confidence due to the short oil pattern, it was a successful enough, if absolutely exhausting, practise with the boys looking pretty comfortable and I came away thinking “at least I know what NOT to do.”

Opening ceremony was good fun, with a lovely buffet laid on by the bowling centre – despite them not usually serving any food. A glass or two of champagne later, and it was time for bed (well for me at least!)

The bowling throughout the week for me at least was nothing to write home about. Scores were up and down for many reasons, and I had never felt so unconfident in my entire life. On the positive side, at least I’ve come away knowing what I need to work on, and DIIB no longer seems unbearably hot. The boys were pretty steady all the way through the tournament, highlight being a very credible 49th place finish in the doubles for Grant and Pete. Not a bad finish against so many strong teams, in what were very difficult conditions!

The eventual winners were Mads Sandbaekken from Norway and Sharon Koh from Malaysia in what proved to be an exciting final to watch and learn from. The team spirit amongst their supporting teams was something we can all learn from.

The farewell banquet that evening was great fun, with much eating, more drinking and a lot of camera snapping. It was a pleasure to meet so many bowlers, in particular the Norwegian team, the Australian team, the Mexicans, the South Africans and our drinking buddies, Malta. I think it’s fair to say that a great night was had by all, and it was the perfect way to what was an extremely well run tournament.

Overall, despite the unbearable heat in the bowling centre, I had a great experience. I learnt a lot, ate a lot, sweated a lot and now know what I have to work on. Bring on Orlando 2008!

Thoughts from David Seay:
I had a really enjoyable experience at my first World Youth Championships in Germany. It was my first experience of a tournament with short and long oil which provided a tough challenge, as I had never played on these conditions before. The short oil I found to be very difficult as accuracy was very important here but shooting a good solid set in singles help me settle. The long I found to be similar to home but still had to adapt to it. A problem that I found was the heat in the bowling centre which was at times very uncomfortable and also didn’t help with the sweat on my fingers.

However overall I had a great time with the rest of the team and also made some new friends from different countries all over the globe. I hope to take the experience and learn from the differing conditions that I played on to help me play better at home and go to other European and World Tournaments in the very near future.
