Junior Irish Open 2011- Report
4th-6th November 2011, Stillorgan, Dublin

A change was in the air in the South of Dublin in November, this year the typical Irish Weather didn’t really kick in and Stillorgan was basked in beautiful Sunshine for the start of the Junior Irish Open Championships. This year in Northern Ireland sent 5 Juniors’ and their 2 coaches to the championships this year. 3 Players making their debuts were Andy Kennedy, debuting in the Under 19 boys’ section. Andrew Deane and Cameron Gibson debuting in the Under 12 boys’ section. Returning to the championships for the second time was Rachael Martin in the Under 12 girls’ section and returning for her 4th Championships was Zara Payne in the Under 19 girls’ section.

Players, families and coaches made the journey down on the Friday night where the players made use of the facilities in the hotel, namely the pool table. I think we must have lost count of many games of pool were played and who came out as the winner but good craic was plenty. Everyone sat down to a nice meal before heading to bed for the next mornings competition.

Andy and Zara were up first, Andy played solidly and to his average for his first 3 games. His release was consistent and getting better with his new equipment that he had received and listening to the advice from the coaches, his game would improve in the second block. Zara’s usual solid start to this tournament would continue as in previous years with a 210 game for her second game.

Next to the lanes were Cameron, Rachael and Andrew. Like Sam in previous years, Cameron’s two handed approach was attracting attention of the crowd. This reporter believes he could be like Osku Palermaa!! Again, he played to his average and one or two more spares would have ensured a passage to round two but lady luck was not smiling but couldn’t wipe the smile from Cameron and proud dad Gordon.

Andrew like all the players played to his average, solid shots down 4th arrow were key to his success and his shooting was solid with lots and lots of 8’s and 9’s. A few more spares like Cameron would have ensured progress but again lady luck would not smile for Andrew. Again, he still had a big smile and so did proud Dad Colin. Andrew knows what he needs to work on to progress next year and I am confident both boys will return next year and progress into round 2.
Rachael’s advantage knew what to expect from the competition and played slightly above her average and listened intently to the coaches. Her shot was solid and was getting good favourable hits from the pins and her picking up her spares was key to her having a solid set ensuring her place into round 2. (This reporter knows the importance of picking up spares (Thanks Micky!!)

Zara and Andy returned for their 2nd block of 3 games in which Andy would shot his high game of the tournament with a 177 and Zara’s solid set would ensure her progress to Round 2. It was back to the hotel for more pool, relaxation and drink before the tradition of TGI Friday’s for Saturday evening dinner, craic and drinks.

The next morning would see Zara and Rachael make a bid for the Round Robin finals. Zara’s solid game would continue from throughout the weekend but was needing a big game which she was unable to produce it at the end due to some unlucky shots and pins not carrying. She would finish 7th for the tournament. Rachael would shoot her high game of the tournament in round 2 but it wasn’t enough to she her into the final round and would finish in 6th place.

My thanks go to all the parents for making this weekend such a success. I would also like to thank everybody for the Fundraising efforts with Rugby World Cup sweepstakes which raised a lot of money for this event and also thank the NITBF for the funding for all the bowlers. And last but not least my thanks to Karen whose coaching skills (with some assistance from this reporter!!) have allowed these Juniors to grow and continue to grow into the future stars of tomorrow.
